The project was the brainchild of the NBDD in West Bengal with the aim of opening up a government aided studio for the promotion of local talent. The idea was to expose the upcoming talent to newer opportunities and not limit their talents to a proscenium stage. With the help of the National School of Drama, New Delhi, a Blackbox studio was planned, which is the only such studio in East India, and only the second such studio in India. The second studio is an amphi-theatre in the centre of the complex with a seating area and multi-levelled balconies. This space can accommodate 150 people and will be used for workshops, rehearsals and even the odd plays. The academy has dormitory rooms for the actors as well as residential suites for dignitaries. The building has a conference hall which can also be used as a classroom and a landscape garden for the actors to rejuvenate.
